Nalini Singh 2013 ARRA for Favourite Paranormal Romance
RH: Nalini Singh, thanks for stopping by. Congratulations on winning the 2013 ARRA for Favourite Paranormal Romance. Why don’t you whet our appetites by telling us a little about Heart of Obsidian?
NS: Thank you, Rowena! I was so excited to win the ARRA Award for Heart of Obsidian – my thanks to everyone who voted for Kaleb and Sahara’s story!
HEART OF OBSIDIAN is book 12 in the Psy-Changeling series, but I’ve been told by many readers new to the series that this book stands alone very well, too, so if one of your blog readers would like to dive straight into it, that’s definitely doable.
HEART OF OBSIDIAN is a book with a really fitting title. The hero of the book, Kaleb Krychek, is a telekinetic powerful enough to cause earthquakes. He’s also not a “good” guy in the normal sense of the word. He is colored very much in shades of grey, except when it comes to the one person who is everything to him – for her, he will destroy civilizations and annihilate thousands.
This is a dark, beautiful love story, but it’s also the story of a world on the brink of chaos. The events of this book forever change the Psy-Changeling world – but the love story is at the core of everything. Kaleb is a critical player in the Psy-Changeling world. And every decision Kaleb makes is shaped in some way by the bond he shares with Sahara, a bond that began when they were children but that is now damaged and near-broken as a result of a terrible event seven years ago. HEART OF OBSIDIAN is the story of how the two find their way back to one another.
Kaleb Krychek, cardinal telekinetic and a man no one wanted to meet alone on a dark night, had been searching for his quarry for seven years, three weeks, and two days. Even while he slept, his mind had continued to hunt through the sprawling psychic network that was the heartbeat and the cage of the Psy race. Not for a day, not for a second, had he forgotten his search, forgotten what they’d taken from him.
Everyone involved would pay. He’d make certain of it.
Right now, however, he had different priorities, his search complete, his target huddled in a corner of a small, windowless room in his isolated home on the outskirts of Moscow. Crouching down in front of her, he held out a glass of water. “Drink.”

RH: You are a New York Times bestselling author and a prolific writer with multiple translations. Share with us a little about your writing journey.
NS: I’ve been writing since I was a child. It was as a teenager that I began to try to write full-length novels. I made my first submission when I was eighteen. (I was determined!)
It took a few more years to get published, and that first book, DESERT WARRIOR, was a short category romance for Silhouette Desire. I wrote five more books for Desire before selling SLAVE TO SENSATION, the first book in my Psy-Changeling series.
SLAVE TO SENSATION sold at auction (meaning more than one publisher was interested in it), which was both nerve-wracking and crazy-exciting!
RH: Nalini, I am in awe of what you’ve achieved and how prolific you are. I hope you still have some energy left because it’s time for your…
NS: Remembrance by Jude Deveraux
RH: What are you reading now?
NS: Slightly Married by Mary Balogh, and Meljean Brook’s The Kraken King (this is a serial, with an episode releasing each week).
RH: What is your favourite word?
NS: I have way too many words in my head to pick one!
RH: What is your worst writing habit?
RH: What is the best bit of advice you ever got (about writing or life in general)?
NS: To enjoy and celebrate the good things, and not to focus on / obsess about the bad.
RH: Your fans, and your publisher, are no doubt eagerly awaiting another novel, so what’s next for Nalini Singh?
NS:The next book in my Psy-Changeling series, SHIELD OF WINTER, releases June, and I can’t wait for it to be out! This book is intensely emotional, but the romance also has a piercing sweetness to it that I love.
“The alpha author of paranormal romance” (Booklist) draws us back into her extraordinary Psy-Changeling world, a world torn between violence and peace, passion and ice…“
Assassin. Soldier. Arrow. That is who Vasic is, who he will always be. His soul drenched in blood, his conscience heavy with the weight of all he’s done, he exists in the shadows, far from the hope his people can almost touch—if only they do not first drown in the murderous insanity of a lethal contagion. To stop the wave of death, Vasic must complete the simplest and most difficult mission of his life.
For if the Psy race is to survive, the empaths must wake…
Having rebuilt her life after medical “treatment” that violated her mind and sought to suffocate her abilities, Ivy should have run from the black-clad Arrow with eyes of winter frost. But Ivy Jane has never done what she should. Now, she’ll fight for her people, and for this Arrow who stands as her living shield, yet believes he is beyond redemption. But as the world turns to screaming crimson, even Ivy’s fierce will may not be enough to save Vasic from the cold darkness…
