Silent Scream by Angela Marsons

A tough, kick-ass detective and an old crime that goes to the core of who she is make Silent Scream by Angela Marsons a riveting read.

About the Book

Even the darkest secrets can’t stay buried forever…

Silent Scream coverFive figures gather round a shallow grave. They had all taken turns to dig. An adult sized hole would have taken longer. An innocent life had been taken but the pact had been made. Their secrets would be buried, bound in blood …

Years later, a headmistress is found brutally strangled, the first in a spate of gruesome murders which shock the Black Country.

But when human remains are discovered at a former children’s home, disturbing secrets are also unearthed. D.I. Kim Stone fast realises she’s on the hunt for a twisted individual whose killing spree spans decades.

As the body count rises, Kim needs to stop the murderer before they strike again. But to catch the killer, can Kim confront the demons of her own past before it’s too late?

My Thoughts

Recently I read three novels in a row featuring a tough, headstrong female investigator who put her own safety last and let emotion get the better of her. Silent Scream is by far the best of them.

Kim Stone is a great character and Marsons gives her plenty to deal with in this story of inexplicable murders that have their roots in the past. Stone also has plenty of baggage. She’s rude and focused and utterly dedicated to her team and to getting her man (or woman).

Marsons keeps you guessing with a touch of misdirection and a multi-layered story. Police procedure and politics are believable and don’t overwhelm the story, and the dynamics between Stone, her team, and the forensic archeologists she has to work with add some good tension and reveal facets of Stone’s character.

Silent Scream is a well-crafted crime novel. Nicely written and perfectly pitched, it is a great introduction to the Kim Stone series and I look forward to reading more of this tough character.
